Happy Gas & Sleep Dentistry
HAPPY GAS
We understand that not every child is able to cope with dental treatment while they are awake. We aim to provide a multitude of options to help your child cope with dental treatment.
Options include audio-visual and sensory distractions, minimally invasive dental treatments, alternative methods of numbing teeth as well as options to complete treatment with the help of nitrous oxide sedation, or “happy gas”. Nitrous oxide is a colourless, slightly sweet-smelling gas which helps to lower anxiety levels and helps patients relax during their dental procedure. It has a long history of successful and safe use for dental procedures.
Your child will be required to breathe the gas consistently in through their nose, meaning it may not be suitable for some children, for example those who have chronically blocked noses or other significant medical conditions. For such children, we can offer alternative treatments. Your dentist will assess your child for the suitability of happy gas to ensure the procedure remains successful and safe. Children are usually fully recovered within 5-20 minutes after the procedure.
For children who cannot use happy gas, we can offer various forms of sleep dentistry. Click here to learn more
SLEEP DENTISTRY
For some children, particularly those requiring complex and lengthy dental procedures, or for those who have tried happy gas with little effect, deeper types of sedation can be provided in the form of intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia (“sleep dentistry”).
We also work with a number of anaesthetists, local hospitals and day surgeries to be able to provide treatment under general anaesthesia. We have a strong commitment to patient safety and wellbeing, and carefully weigh up all the options for your child prior to considering any forms of sedation. Let us guide you through our menu of options to help you select the best method for treating your unique and wonderful child.
